What it is like

Stanwood, from the official record.

Every fact here comes from the city, the county, WSDOT or the parks agencies. Sources are listed below.

01

Getting around

From I-5, take Exit 212 onto SR 532; the city says Stanwood is five minutes west, on the way to Camano Island, and WSDOT calls SR 532 the city's primary corridor to I-5. The city puts Seattle less than an hour away.

Stanwood has an Amtrak Cascades station, opened in 2009. Community Transit routes run to Arlington, Lynnwood and Everett, and Island Transit connects to Camano Island.

02

Parks and trails

Hamilton Landing Park has a public boat launch onto the Stillaguamish River and Puget Sound, beside the Hamilton smokestack you can see from miles away. Heritage Park has a wetland with an interpretive trail, and Church Creek Park has a short wooded trail to Douglas Creek.

West of town, between Port Susan and Skagit bays, the state's Leque Island Wildlife Area Unit is reached from SR 532, and Camano Island State Park is across the bridge.

03

The land

Stanwood moved to its present location along the Stillaguamish waterfront, and the city describes its ties to the surrounding farmland. Local farms sell fresh produce through the spring, summer and fall.

Port Susan Bay and Camano Island are right next door.

04

Known for

Stanwood was first known as Centerville. Its postmaster renamed it Stanwood in honor of his wife's maiden name, Clara Stanwood Pearson. It was incorporated in 1904, and Stanwood and East Stanwood joined in 1960. A bridge built in 1909 created the road to Camano Island, and by 1913 the streets were paved with brick.

Today the city hosts a summer farmers market, a car show on the last Sunday in June, and the Stanwood/Camano Fair the first weekend in August.
