What it is like

Mount Vernon, from the official record.

Every fact here comes from the city, the county, WSDOT or the parks agencies. Sources are listed below.

01

Getting around

I-5 reaches Mount Vernon at Exit 226 for SR 536 and Kincaid Street and Exit 227 for SR 538 and College Way. The SR 536 Division Street Bridge joins east and west Mount Vernon, and SR 536 is also an alternate route toward the Anacortes ferry and Whidbey Island. The Riverside Bridge links Riverside Drive with Burlington Boulevard.

Skagit Station downtown brings together Skagit Transit, Amtrak Cascades and Greyhound, with commuter buses to Everett Station.

02

Parks and trails

Little Mountain Park has 11 miles of trails across 522 acres, with views of the Skagit Valley, Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains. Downtown, the Skagit Riverwalk runs along the river and connects to the paved Kulshan Trail, which heads east past Bakerview Park.

Edgewater Park has paved and unpaved paths along the Skagit, and Kiwanis Park has a raised boardwalk through its wetlands.

03

The valley

Mount Vernon lies in the Skagit River valley, where farm crops and grasses cover the lowlands. The Skagit runs west through Sedro-Woolley, Burlington and Mount Vernon.

Parts of the river provide habitat for bald eagles and osprey.

04

Known for

Mount Vernon was settled in 1870 on reclaimed land, and once the river's logjams were cleared, steamers came upriver to the settlement. Today it is the county seat.

Every April the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival comes to the valley, with a Tulip Festival Street Fair downtown, and the downtown is home to the historic Lincoln Theatre.
