Skagit County
Living in Burlington.
Where I-5 meets SR 20, with the Skagit River as its southern edge and farmland all around.
What it is like
Burlington, from the official record.
Every fact here comes from the city, the county, WSDOT or the parks agencies. Sources are listed below.
Getting around
I-5 meets SR 20 in Burlington at Exit 230, with SR 11 and Chuckanut Drive at Exit 231. Westbound, SR 20 leads to Whidbey Island, Anacortes and the San Juan Islands, and eastbound it becomes the North Cascades Highway.
Chuckanut Station is the city's transit hub, Route 208 connects Burlington and Mount Vernon, and a path for walking and biking along SR 20 starts in Lions Park.
Parks and trails
Skagit River Park has 80 acres of playfields, one of the largest natural grass field complexes in the state, along with disc golf, horseshoe pits, pea patch gardens, radio control racing tracks and river access.
The 2.2-mile Burlington Dike Trail is a popular walk with views of the Skagit, and the Gus Tjeerdsma Boat Launch is a year-round two-lane ramp.
The land
The Skagit River forms the city's southern edge, and the river supports all six species of Pacific salmon and steelhead. Burlington Hill rises more than 400 feet and holds the largest stand of forest left in the city.
Gages Slough runs through town as a band of habitat for waterfowl and other birds.
Known for
Burlington was incorporated on June 27, 1902. Fairhaven Avenue is its historic business district, with a traditional main street look.
Berry Dairy Days, one of the city's oldest festivals, comes every June with fresh local strawberry shortcake. The city also hosts Friday night concerts in July, a fall harvest festival at Maiben Park and the Skagit County Veterans Day Parade.
From Rich
I have lived in Arlington since December 2003, and I started driving trucks on Snohomish and Skagit County roads in 2004. If you are weighing Burlington, call or text me and I will tell you what I know about it, and what I do not.
